Accompanist - John Cooper

For many years, John Cooper was the Organist and Director of Music at St Mary-le-Tower, the Civic Church of Ipswich. He was also Senior Lecturer in the Colchester Institute School of Music, and for ten years, the Conductor of the Ipswich Choral Society. He was Chairman of the Suffolk area of the Royal School of Church Music for a number of years.

Born in Leicester, he was formerly Organist of Holy Trinity Church in Leamington Spa, Conductor of the Royal Leamington Spa Bach Choir and Director of Music at Leamington College. In 1962 the Leamington Bach Choir and his boy choristers at Holy Trinity Church sang in the première of Britten’s War Requiem in the newly-built Coventry Cathedral, a performance in which he was also organist. Both in Leamington Spa and Ipswich he has conducted, amongst other works, Elgar's Dream of Gerontius, Walton's Belshazzar's Feast. Bach’s St Matthew and St John Passions and Requiems by Brahms, Fauré and Mozart. In 2003 he conducted performances of Elgar’s The Music Makers and Ridout’s Canticle of Joy with Hadleigh Choral Society.

He is currently organist at St Mary’s Church, Grundisburgh, and is much in demand as a recitalist, performing regularly at venues in East Anglia and further afield, from York Minster to Halle, Handel’s birthplace.

John joined Hadleigh Choral Society as accompanist in 2002. He has performed as soloist as well as accompanist in several concerts and he also provided and trained the ‘Pickled Boys’ for two performance of Britten’s St Nicolas.

In his spare time he is a steam train enthusiast, and on one occasion was the trainee driver on a train, with his family on board, on the Ffestiniog Railway in North Wales.
