Dramatic and majestic, the organ will feature prominently in these three choral works featuring a series of musical depictions of biblical psalms, a requiem mass and heartfelt poems.
Commissioned for the 1965 Southern Cathedrals Festival at Chichester Cathedral, the text for Bernstein's Chichester Psalms was set to the Book of Psalms in the original Hebrew. The composer scored the work for orchestra, with a later, reduced version for organ, harp and percussion which the choir will be performing.
Vaughan William's Five Mystical Songs were set to poems written by poet and Anglican priest, George Herbert in the seventeenth century. It was first performed at the Three Choirs Festival in Worcester in 1911, conducted by the composer.
Finally, Durufle's Requiem - completed in 1947. Set in Latin in nine movements, it incorporates some beautiful themes from Gregorian chants.
